Reflash your phone with the free Nokia Software Updater

After a successful trial run last year, the Nokia Software Updater application is now available. The new, free application enables people to update their own mobile device software without having to visit a service point. Once the application is installed on a compatible computer, users can connect their compatible Nokia devices via a USB cable and Nokia Software Updater automatically detects the device type. It then determines whether any required software updates are needed and guides users through the updating process. So far nearly a million people have updated their Nokia devices using Nokia Software Updater.

Learn how to implement targeted mobile advertising

Programming for Nokia devices is changing the mediascape. Two new mobile advertising services are transforming the way people use their phones: Nokia Ad Service and Nokia Advertising Connector. Nokia Ad Service is a fully managed service for advertisers to conduct targeted advertising on mobile services and applications. It consists of a group of mobile publishers forming a mobile ad network and a platform to deploy, manage and optimize mobile advertising campaigns. The other service, Nokia Advertising Connector, accommodates third-party publishers and advertising aggregator companies that want to extend to relevant mobile advertising. Nokia Advertising Connector operates as an intelligent switch, selecting between text, visual, audio, and video ads — depending on the user's context — and feeding the ad to the device.

Have you switched to Carbide.c++ yet?

Get outstanding features such as the new project wizard, project templates, public SDK support, project import/export, online tutorials, integrated project builder, emulator debugging, advanced project import/export, and enhanced build target support for creating Symbian C++ applications, by switching to Carbide.c++. Two new Forum Nokia papers can help developers make the move. Switching to Carbide.c++ reviews the approaches to Symbian C++ development using Carbide.c++, Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 and CodeWarrior® Development Studio for Symbian OS. The document examines the tool's major features and highlights the differences among the tools. The other paper, On-Device Debugging with Carbide.c++, provides full step-by-step instructions for setting up Carbide.c++ and a S60 3rd Edition device for on-device debugging — a key feature that's reason enough for switching to Carbide.c++. For developers new to on-device debugging, this paper provides the information needed to get started, while more experienced Carbide.c++ users will find the paper's troubleshooting guide invaluable for diagnosing and fixing on-device debugging issues. Get both white papers.

Avoid the 10 most common S60 development problems

Forum Nokia has reviewed various Symbian Signed and Nokia test reports and identified the most common reasons S60 platform applications fail to pass Symbian Signed and additional Nokia tests. This new document lists 10 of the most common problems — such as prolonged startup, incorrect application scaling, and reboot-prompted application launching — and recommends solutions with illustrations, screen shots, and code examples. Developers who carefully address issues described in the document will face fewer test rounds and enjoy the related cost savings.

Learn about the S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS documentation update

The S60 3rd Edition SDK for Symbian OS documentation update is now available. This is a maintenance release that includes API reference documentation. The document also highlights changes between 3rd Edition maintenance release and 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1.

Free testing tools for Mobile Java™ games

By implementing a groundbreaking initiative, the SNAP Mobile Compliance Testing Program, Nokia is ensuring that developers can create connected games that offer consumers a consistent game-playing experience. The program will promote uniform quality and functionality of the connected features in the mobile games and limit development costs by combining a self-testing along with a traditional certification program. The first phase lets developers self-test their own games for free using the provided testing tool. After completing the self-test, developers will be required to submit their applications for compliance testing, which will be conducted by SNAP Mobile-authorized testing houses.

Developer spotlight: AGIS' NavFone suite brings LBS to Asia-Pacific region

Singapore-based Asia GIS Pte Ltd. has taken the lead in integrating location-based services (LBS) into cell-ID location technology. NAVFone, the company's suite of personal navigation applications based on its GprX technology, uses a unique algorithm to calculate its location from network information gathered by the mobile phone — without using GPS. GprX technology runs on all S60 3rd Edition devices that are connected to 3G or GSM networks. Forum Nokia has been instrumental in helping AGIS position GprX as the primary location technology on 3G/GSM for mobile users in Asia.

Blog: Agile software development

Get testing tips from Forum Nokia Champion, Artem Marchenko, whose latest blog provides an overview of what he values in an agile-aware C++ integrated development environment. Agile development is a software methodology that aims to minimize risk through short periods of software revisions. While Agile development is more about people and processes, it touches on some technical issues such as automating repetitive coding tasks and unit testing.

Discussion thread of the week: Open C FAQ

The Forum Nokia discussion boards have added a forum dedicated to Open C development. The Open C discussion thread features a set of frequently asked questions (FAQ), including "What is Open C," "Which libraries support Open C," and "What I can do with Open C."

Open C is a major extension to the C++ development environment. Nokia added API libraries to the Symbian operating system based on the open POSIX C and other standards to enable developers to reuse code and libraries from open sources and previous Linux work.
