The winners of the Nokia and SingTel Multiplayer Game Quest have been announced after several months of exciting competition between Forum Nokia PRO developer finalists from around the world. The winning games will be offered for commercial distribution with SingTel and its regional partners, to more than 112 million subscribers in the Asia Pacific region. The development was performed using the SNAP Mobile platform, Nokia's end-to-end solution for developing connected Java™ mobile games. SNAP Mobile makes adding community features, such as account creation/login, rankings, friends list, and instant messaging, a relatively simple task. Along with getting around-the-clock support through Forum Nokia, developers using SNAP Mobile avoid upfront costs with their hosted server solution and benefit from established operator and/or Nokia distribution channels.
Downloaded 30,000 times in its first two days of availability, smart2go's popularity gives developers insight into the future of programming for mobile applications. Smart2go lets users view their location on a map, search for points-of-interests and create routes to get to those points of interest. Smart2go enables mapping and routing in over 150 countries and supports full turn-by-turn satellite navigation in over 30 countries. Nokia is initially offering the smart2go application for free for select Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices and has plans to roll out support for most major mobile development platforms including Nokia's S60 platform, Series 40, PocketPC, and Linux.

Forum Nokia Champion Paul Coulton and mobile developer Reuben Edwards, have created a practical 328-page guide that will help readers develop Symbian applications. Based on the authors' experiences developing and teaching Symbian, the book offers programmers a series of example-based development scenarios. The text also includes an extended walk-through of the development of a console-based card game engine into a graphical user interface (GUI)-based, two-player blackjack game operating over a Bluetooth connection between two mobile phones. The authors go on to address how Symbian offers a number of different user interface and screen saver variants to allow for different user interfaces and screen sizes. To learn more about how the move toward 3G technology is pushing the need for mobile application development for S60 devices, and to purchase the book, go to: eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470027657.html.
Malware writers have set their sights on the smartphone as their latest target. Standing between that malware and the smartphone, however, is a powerful counterforce: F-Secure Corporation. The company's F-Secure Mobile Security, offers a complete mobile security solution with a firewall for S60 3rd Edition devices. It automatically scans all files on the device when they are saved, copied, downloaded, synchronized, or modified. Infected files are quarantined, so the device stays clean. Virus definition updates are automatically retrieved over the air in the background so that a phone is always protected against the latest threats. Forum Nokia PRO's online technical support and feedback allowed F-Secure to access technical information, such as specific API's it needed while developing its F-Secure Mobile Security anti-virus software. The software is sold primarily as a service, rather than an application and is available through a variety of channels: mobile operators, ISPs, and enterprises.
Learn about new applications for the 3D accelerometer in the Nokia 5500. In this blog entry, Forum Nokia Champion Andreas Jakl lays out two new applications developed by students of the University of Applied Sciences' in Hagengerg, Austria. Building on the "fall detector" application, the new concepts offer innovations for both the sports and automotive industries. One of the programs, gBoarder, monitors movements as a user goes downhill on a snowboard. After the ride, gBoarder displays statistics such as how many times the user has crashed.
Check out the latest updates on an ongoing Forum Nokia discussion thread on Bluetooth multiplayer games. The thread includes a new post about BlueMGF, a SourceForge project that offers a framework for creating Java multiplayer games for mobile devices via Bluetooth. There's already been some talk within the thread of recreating classic 1980s games so that they can be played on mobile devices via Bluetooth — keep reading to see where the discussion will go.
