VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) refers to the capability of routing voice conversations over IP-based networks, such as the Internet. VoIP has rapidly expanded from the PC-driven experience to mobile networks. Mobile VoIP can use any IP bearer, such as home and office WiFi networks or telecom networks. The S60 platform supports the use of mobile VoIP services and the creation of related applications. Also selected Series 40 devices will soon start shipping with VoIP client.

There are two main alternatives for using VoIP services with S60 3rd Edition mobile devices: create a stand-alone VoIP client with Symbian C++, or configure the Nokia SIP VoIP client to work with IETF SIP servers.

Making use of the Nokia VoIP framework
VoIP service providers can use the integrated Nokia SIP VoIP client (for S60, and soon also for Series 40) to provide mobile VoIP services without having to do any software development on the S60 platform. VoIP service providers can simply configure this Nokia VoIP client to work with their SIP servers by manually configuring the settings, sending the OMA DM settings over SMS, or creating an application that configures the Nokia client. This allows a quick route to market.
